Myofascial Release (MFR) treatments are gentle and relaxing but from time to time a session may be therapeutically challenging. Our bodies are feeling, physical beings. We often tune out pain and other unpleasant sensations, but bodywork – strongly rooted in MFR techniques – encourages one to feel ALL of the sensations that may arise. This is what our bodies need to do to heal. Your therapist will help you recognize, acknowledge and understand the necessity behind these therapeutically uncomfortable moments. It is most important to know that although MFR may bring up physical or emotional pain, it does not force and will not injure you.
MFR stretching tends to elicit a warming response resembling the sensations of “taffy stretching”. Some people use descriptive words like heat, burning, tingling, numbness, popping, buzzing and bubbles moving….often subtle variations of those words combined to simply form an “experience”. You may become more aware of other areas of your body and feel a connection between the areas of the stretch. We refer to those areas that speak to you as your, ‘fascial voice’.
It is important to listen to your body during and after a session. Some delayed soreness may be experienced. This is a natural part of the healing process. Drink plenty of water before and after your treatments. And, give yourself permission to experience any and all sensations to the fullest.
